PHOTO: Did Orji Kalu go and beg Abba Kyari in this photo as claimed?

A picture of Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia state, kneeling down alongside Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, is circulating online.
In a message shared on social media particularly on Whatsapp, Kalu, who was recently convicted of fraud, was said to be begging Abba Kyari, President Muhammadu Buhari’s chief of staff, to be pardoned of his crime.
The plea is said to be in connection with a recent fraud conviction for N7.1 billion which he committed during his time as governor.

The message in circulation claims that Kalu, who currently represents Abia north at the senate, was begging to not go to jail — “but it didn’t work”.
However, TheCable reports that the claim is not true.

Onyeama had joined others at the former governor’s house to celebrate the Christ the King feast, an annual celebration by the Catholic church.
A video of the celebration also showed those in attendance while a priest officiated the ceremony.

Sowore: NBA blows hot as DSS invades court

Sowore: NBA blows hot as DSS invades court

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the suspension of the Director General of the Department of State Services, (DSS), Yusuf Bichi.
The umbrella body of lawyers said this while condemning the invasion of a Federal High Court in Abuja by armed officials of the DSS.
DAILY POST had reported that DSS operatives on Friday chased out lawyers from the courtroom and attacked journalists after which they re-arrested Sowore.
Following the invasion of the courtroom, the trial judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu adjourned the matter till February 11, 12 and 13 for definite hearing.
This is coming less than a day after Sowore was released by the DSS after an Abuja Federal High Court ordered for his release within 24 hours.
However, NBA in reaction, said it was disgraceful that the ‘court riot’ occasioned by the high handedness and insensitivity of the security operatives interrupted judicial proceedings and made the Presiding Judge to abandon proceedings because of safety concerns.
The body further called on the National Assembly to review the laws setting up the DSS and all security agencies in Nigeria, with a view to repositioning them to be more responsible and responsive to the public.

A statement DAILY POST obtained from NBA’s official Twitter page reads, “The Nigerian Bar Association is greatly dismayed at the exhibition of primitivity, thuggery, insane passion for lawlessness, contempt and disrespect for the rule of law by the agents of the Department of State Services (DSS) within the precincts of the Federal High Court, Abuja while attempting to re-arrest Citizens Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare.

“The NBA has been properly briefed – beyond the shameful videos of the incident in public domain- by our members who witnessed the disgraceful and crass violation of the hallowed precincts of the law by the officers of the Department of State Services, an agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“The Nigerian Bar Association strongly condemns the action of the Department of State Security, which is another in the series of impunity and lawlessness exhibited by the DSS. The invasion of the court by the agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria runs contrary to the avowed assurances of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that he will ensure that the Federal Government and agencies under it obeys court orders.

The disrespect of the court by the DSS is legendary and unrivalled.
“Few days ago, the officers of the Nigerian Police Force exhibited similar traits when it also invaded the precincts of the High Court, Effurun to arrest Mr. Ademi-Akpeto, Chairman of Sapele branch of the NBA. Many Nigerians are still in unlawful custody and not charged to court. Nigerians are now under siege by security agents who have no regards for the law and the courts.

“The NBA urges all Nigerians to be alive to their responsibilities as citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and is ready to partner with all Nigerians and civil society organisations to ensure that the rights of Nigerians as guaranteed by Chapter 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended are not trampled upon by by any agency of government.

It also demanded that the Attorney General of the Federation, take over all the political cases or case involving politically exposed persons presently handled by the DSS.”

IPOB: Igbo group alleges militarization of South-East

IPOB: Igbo group alleges militarization of South-East

An Igbo group, Igbo National Council (INC), has condemned in strong terms the alleged invasion of the home of Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor in Oraifite, Anambra state by a team of security operatives, comprising the police and military officers.

Ejiofor is counsel to the Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Following the incident, the police had claimed that IPOB members burnt two of its officers to death, hence declaring Ejiofor wanted.
But in a video shared on Facebook on Tuesday, Ejiofor wondered why police stormed his residence despite speaking with the area police commander earlier.

He claimed that some police officers took away the corpses of those killed and burnt them somewhere.
However, INC, in a statement signed by its National President, Chilos Godsent and National Secretary, Mr. Zulu Ofoelue, and made available to newsmen in Umuahia, the Abia state capital, described the action of the combined team of security operatives as a show of wickedness and hatred against the Igbo race.

The socio-political body urged the Nigeria Police and other security agencies operating in the eastern Nigeria to stop forthwith the killings of armless civilians and the militarization of the zone.
Parts of the statement read, “While we condole with the families of the two men of the Nigerian Police Force that was said to have lost their lives during the attack, according to the Police Press Statement signed by SP Haruna Mohammed – PPRO of Anambra State Police Command, we also condemn in strong terms the unprofessional, reckless and wanton killing or civilians and burning of houses in Oraifite community during said attempt to arrest Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor who is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

“INC is not ignorant of the deliberate policy of the present regime of the Federal Government of Nigeria to militarize the Eastern Nigeria in other to find reasons to launch merciless military offensive against the region which, is meant to manifest the orchestrated plan to create fears and annihilation of the people of the Eastern Nigeria before the 2023 Presidential Election which South-East Zone is seriously demanding to produce the President of Nigeria”.
