Uganda Launches First Phone Manufacturing Plant

Uganda Launches First Phone Manufacturing Plant

President Yoweri Museveni on Friday launched Uganda’s first mobile phone manufacturing and assembling plant.
The plant by Chinese firm, Engo, in Namanve in the capital Kampala, will produce SIMI-branded handsets.
At full capacity, the factory will run three production lines; each line with daily production of 2,000 feature phones, 1,500 smart phones, 800 laptops, 2,000 chargers, 4,000 USB cables and 4000 sets of earphones and directly employing more than 400 staff.
“I am very happy with the Chinese solidarity with Uganda and Africa. Uganda is moving very well, the economy has grown to $35 billion using the normal method of calculating GDP,” said President Museveni.
He added that the only remaining challenge for his government to overcome was corruption.
“We don’t have any other problem. We now have electricity, we are going to solve the problem of transport costs. We have also started solving the problem of ICT,” Museveni added.
Earlier, the State Minister for Investment and Privatization, Evelyn Anite said that manufacturing the phones locally will reduce the country’s import bill.
“A phone will cost only Ush20, 000 ($5). We are going to have a reduction in the importation of phones. The message I want to send to Ugandans today is to buy the products made in Uganda for the growth, development and betterment of our country,” said Ms Anite.
According to ICT Minister, Mr Frank Tumwebaze, one of the cost-push factors for internet is failure by people to afford devices that are able to connect to the internet.
“The phones we saw cannot connect to the internet but they are going to make smart phones. A plan is underway to connect all industrial Parks to the National Backbone infrastructure. Investors will not have to incur high costs of internet connectivity which in this day and age is an essential component of any industrial operation,” he said.

“I’m expecting that. But if he wants to bang, it’s better for me. I love to bang because that’s the fighter that I am,” Ruiz Jr exclusively told Sky Sports, six months after flooring Joshua four times and completing a memorable shock.

“December 7 we have to pressure, work the body, break him down. Especially his mentality.

“We’ve got to see where he’s at because all the pressure is on him. The pressure isn’t on me because I followed my dream, made my dreams come true.
“Of course I want more – I want the legacy of Andy Ruiz Jr.”
Ruiz Jr had previously explained that his sparring partners were being “slick” in anticipation of Joshua trying to be elusive.
“People haven’t seen me cut off the ring,” Ruiz Jr warned. “I actually break them down even faster when they try to box me around.”

Biafra: What Will Happen If Nnamdi Kanu Returns For Mother's Burial - Police

Biafra: What Will Happen If Nnamdi Kanu Returns For Mother's Burial - Police

This follows the news that has gone viral in recent time that Kanu would return home for his mother’s burial.

Police in Abia State has vowed to take a decisive action against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu if he returns to Nigeria for the burial of his mother.
This follows the news that has gone viral in recent time that Kanu would return home for his mother’s burial.
The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, sounded it loud and clear that police in the state will not spare Kanu if he sets foot in Abia.

Okon said this is because the IPOB leader was declared wanted.
The CP, in an interview with the Sun, equally warned that police will not hesitate to arrest any IPOB member who may want to identify himself as belonging to the pro Biafra group during the burial.
IPOB had said that their leader, Kanu will be coming home for his mother’s burial.
He said, “Well, if members of IPOB are speculating that, the police do not know that one. What I know is that Nnmadi Kanu jumped bail and escaped and is wanted and remains a wanted man.
“Until that time, but I couldn’t tell you about police action on anything that is speculation, until he comes.
“If he comes back and submits himself to the police, police will know what to do at that time. Like I said earlier, we do not deal on speculation, but if actually he will come back, then we will know what to do.

“If he submits himself, we have to take him before the court, but where if he fails to submit himself to the police if he comes back, he is a wanted man; he is a wanted man and the law on somebody that is wanted is clear.

“Even you as a private person or civilian can arrest a wanted man and hand him over to the police. Then what will police do? If someone is wanted and police sees that person, definitely he will be arrested by the police and handed over to the court.
“Did he jump bail or not? He had a case in court, he was granted bail, and he jumped bail. So, when somebody jumps bail, what do you call that one?
“If he claims he did not do anything, he that will be an illusion, living in the inclination of the grandeur. The fact remains that he jumped bail and escaped; and he is wanted, he is wanted. So, that is the position.
“The court will decide and not the police. But the fact remains that once any person is declared wanted, wherever the police see him in any corner of Nigeria, the person will be arrested.
“That has to do with international law and a lot of things are involved that require going through Interpol.
“Some people believe Nigeria police is acting as local lords in this matter. Why has it not initiated that move for Interpol to get the IPOB leader arrested?

“That’s a question I cannot answer, there is international dimension to it. The Federal Government has to come in here.
“You know Nigeria is a member of Interpol, a member of international organizations that have treaties; it has to go through these treaties, conventions and all that.

“You can’t just jump over some of these things and you say you want to arrest somebody, no, there are procedures.
“We are in a country that has treaties with other countries, we need a whole lot of laws and all that and you have to go through all those procedures, it’s not a day’s job.”

Uwazuruike Reveals 'One Person' Behind Allen Onyema's Travails

Uwazuruike Reveals 'One Person' Behind Allen Onyema's Travails

The EFCC had, on Saturday, set up a special panel to look into the allegation of S44.9 million wire frauds and money laundering against Onyema.

The leader of Biafra Independent Movement, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has accused the Federal Government of masterminding the plan by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission to probe the Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace Limited, Chief Allen Onyema.

Uwazuruike said the plan by the EFCC to open a probe against Onyema and the recent call by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Loretta Onochie, asking Onyema to face his changes in the United States of America indicated that the FG was behind the probe.

He said Onochie spoke the mind of the Presidency but warned that Ndigbo would rise against any plan to humiliate Onyema.

The EFCC had, on Saturday, set up a special panel to look into the allegation of S44.9 million wire frauds and money laundering against Onyema.

Uwazuruike said, “I am Ijele of Igboland and it’s my responsibility to defend Igbo people since the demise of Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu, which Onyema is one of, and I tell you that I have all it takes to resist the FG from persecuting my people”.
“We have been pushed to the wall by the Federal Government and Onyema’s case will prove a point, so he should not be intimidated and must remain firm”.

I will never get married or have children’ – Actor Olu Michaels

I will never get married or have children’ – Actor Olu Michaels

Nollywood actor and filmmaker Olu Michaels has finally opened up on why he won’t be getting married or having children.
In an interview with TheNation, the 48-year-old star said: “I’m not married, and I don’t intend to. Truth be told, I’m scared of marriage and I don’t think I will ever get married.

Though, I wanted to have kids when I was younger but not now, it is too late. Why I said it’s too late for having children is that I am a workaholic and I don’t  like a situation where I would want to sleep and then a baby starts crying. My parents have been begging me to get married but no.”

Why asked what he looks for in a woman, he said: “I am a jealous man. For example, if I marry an actress and I see her kissing another actor on set, I will never tolerate such. Also, if I marry a beautiful woman, I might never concentrate on my work because I will be on the look to protect her.

On whether he feels lonely at night, Michaels said: “What I do every time I feel lonely is that I have a car that I bought with all my money. It is a Mercedes-Benz and the interior is wow. I love it. I just drive round town and get home and sleep off.”

Injustice, insecurity: We’ll regret our inaction soon —Aisha Buhari

Injustice, insecurity: We’ll regret our inaction soon —Aisha Buhari

THE First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Friday declared that political leaders in the country would soon regret the consequences of the worsening insecurity in the country unless they wake up and arrest the drift.
Mrs Buhari lambasted state governors and ministers over the inability of some Nigerians to access potable water as well as the political officeholders’ lack of action in arresting the rising insecurity across the country.
Speaking in Abuja at the General Assembly of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the First Lady said there was the need for stakeholders to support President Muhammadu Buhari to fight insecurity.
According to her, the rising insecurity, which is as a result of injustice, has made it impossible for many political officeholders to travel to their states and villages and live peacefully.
While lamenting the level of insecurity, the president’s wife said if the needful was not done, political leaders would regret the outcome soon.
“I have listened to the speech of his Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, where he talked about justice and the Minister of Communications talked about justice and injustice and I think he did not mention the consequences of injustice.

“The conference is timely and this is the right time to address the problems in Nigeria. The problems have been escalating from one thing to the other. Thinking that General Muhammadu Buhari will solve it alone, he cannot do it alone. We have to work together to make sure that we do the needful. As Muslims, we operate within the guidelines of Islamic injunctions.

“We must do justice to ourselves. As a result of long time of injustice done to others, today, most of us cannot go to our villages and sleep with our two eyes closed. We all know that and it is moving forward and forward.

“My husband has three years to go. We should fasten our seat belts, get up and do the needful or we will all regret it very soon, because at the rate which things are going, things are completely out of hand. The vice president is here, ministers are here. They are supposed to do justice to whatever. People cannot afford potable, drinking water in this country. We have ministers, we have governors.

“Since this is the highest decision-making body of Islamic affairs, for those that are Muslims, we should fear God and we know that one day we will return to God and account for our deeds here. I hope that the decisions, debates and engagements here today will be fruitful with a view to reaching realistic decisions for shaping our lives as a nation,” Mrs Buhari said.

In his address, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo emphasised the need for Muslims and Christians to coexist peacefully as a nation.
He highlighted incidents where Christians and Muslims had defended one another in times of violence.

He, however, expressed hope that the recommendations of the meeting with the theme ‘Islam and National Development’ would be used to consolidate on the ongoing development across the country.

In his remarks, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the NSCIA, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, said the General Assembly/National Executive Council meeting would address some of the challenges facing Islam in Nigeria such as the almajiri system and hijab wearing in schools.

Ronny Rono: Kenyan bodybuilder who reportedly injected himself with synthol dies

Ronny Rono: Kenyan bodybuilder who reportedly injected himself with synthol dies ▷ Nigeria news

- Ronny Rono said prior to his death that he couldn't recall using synthol

- However, his body significantly dwindled with his arms wasting away in what is the typical aftermath of the chemical

- The 30-year-old bodybuilder passed away on Tuesday,
November 26, while being rushed to Siloam hospital

A bodybuilder who reportedly had a tendency of handing himself Synthol injections died on Tuesday, November 26, while being rushed to Siloam hospital in Kenya.

Ronny Rono was first covered on one of the dailies on September 1 as he appealed for help to tackle the various conditions that came with the potentially lethal injections.
At the time, his upper body was thoroughly swollen while his arms were wasting away.

Rono, 30, also suffered from mental anguish as he could hardly look in the mirror without breaking down in tears.
Doctors diagnosed him at the time as having symptoms of a man who had resorted to synthol injections which can have dire repercussions on the body if used consistently.
Family spokesperson Hilda Chepkemoi confirmed the death, adding that Rono, who was her cousin, had been in and out of hospital since his story first went on air.

"He was admitted at Green View Hospital for two weeks before being discharged. Until his demise, he was in and out of various hospitals for medical tests and was also being attended by a private doctor within Kericho town," she said as quoted by the Standard.
Rono had denied ever having injected himself with Synthol, although he admitted to being a heavy alcohol user during his bodybuilding days and someone might have injected him without his knowledge.

He also said he did not necessarily have memory of all he might have done to his body.
His funeral will be held on December 3, 2019 at Chemosot Village in Bureti constituency.

One of the more popular cases of synthol injections involved Russian bodybuilder Kirill Tereshin, who suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of an opponent 20 years his senior, despite his Popeye-like look courtesy of injecting petroleum jelly in his arms.
Tereshin has since undergone a procedure to take out the shots from his arms after developing complications.

Diezani’s husband :Jonathan begged me for my wife to become minister

Diezani’s husband says Jonathan begged him to allow his wife become minister

Rear Admiral Alison Madueke, husband of the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke has explained how his wife emerged as petroleum minister during Yaradua-Jonathan’s administration.

Madueke, who is a former Chief of Naval Staff said the then Vice-President, Goodluck Jonathan approached him in 2007 to plead with to allow Diezani take up a job as minister in the administration, Punch reports.
He added that at that time, there were very few persons of Bayelsa origin who had his wife’s impressive resumé. Goodluck Jonathan nominated Diezani Alison Madueke as Minister of Petroleum in 2007. (DW)
Goodluck Jonathan nominated Diezani Alison Madueke as Minister of Petroleum in 2007. (DW)
Madueke said this in his recently published book titled, ‘Riding the Storms with God on My Side’.
He said when Diezani accepted the ministerial appointment, he advised her not to focus on money but maintain the good name of the family.
He said, “When finally she was appointed Minister of Transportation, I took further time to advise her on the topic of self protection and self preservation in the bureaucracy.
“I finally recited the advice my father had given me upon my appointment as military governor. “Go do your best, don’t bring back money, but bring back my name.”
The retired naval officer also disclosed that his wife was diagnosed with cancer towards the end of Jonathan’s administration in 2015.
He said, “On Sunday, July 26, 2015, I stepped into my bedroom soon after our brunch to find that my phone was ringing. It was my mother-in-law, Mrs. Beatrice Agama, who was staying with Diezani while she was undertaking treatment. She was sobbing and only managed to inform me that my wife was no longer talking.
“I was in London by 5.30am the following day, Monday, and went straight to see her. Diezani was in a coma. I called an ambulance that arrived 20 minutes later, the attendants bearing a stretcher. They had to get a wheelchair since the lift could not take the stretcher.
“In less than 10 minutes, we were at the emergency intensive care unit of the Harley Street Clinic. Her doctor, Prof. Paul Ellis, a top oncologist, was out of town and had to be recalled.
“Three days later, when Diezani finally came out of the coma, she saw me by her bedside and asked what I was doing in London. She had reacted badly to her Friday chemotherapy treatment. Thank God she pulled through that nightmarish incident and is now fully recovered.”
Diezani Alison Madueke was Nigeria’s Minister of Petroleum Resources from April 2010 to May 2015.

Aisha Buhari Disagrees With Sultan, Insists On Social Media Regulation

The First Lady, Hajiya Aisha Buhari has called for the regulation of social media, noting that China with about 1.3 billion people had done so, stressing that many people could not visit their villages on account of fake news broadcasts.

She also berated state governors for failing to provide basic social amenities and infrastructure.

She said that things were getting out of hand, saying that her husband alone cannot handle the challenges facing the nation and admonished the political leaders to work together to bail the country of out of the challenges. She spoke on Friday at the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) General Assembly and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the National Mosque Abuja, with the theme, “Islam and National Development”.
She said, “On this issue of social media, you cannot just sit in the comfort of your house and tweet that the Vice President has resigned. It is a serious issue. If China can control over 1.3bn people on social media, I see no reason why Nigeria cannot attempt controlling only 180m people.”

The Vice President Yemi Osinbajo while formally declaring the conference opened, admonished Nigerians to be their brother’s keeper regardless of their religious affiliation, as all Nigerians are equal.

He stated, “It is my view that the weight of ensuring that this country is on the right track is on our leaders. We should be our brother’s keeper no matter the religion. We should always be ready to make sacrifices for one another.
We have religious and tribal tension in this country. Many are beating the drum of ethnic and religious war. We are at a historic juncture of our nation.”

The NSCIA President-General and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III in his opening remarks, said the nation must come together to address its challenges, insisting that girl-child education and the Almajiri phenomenon must be addressed urgently.

He also disagreed with the calls for social media regulation, stating that there were laws to deal with the abuse of the platforms. “I have received so many calls on the need to regulate social media. In Nigeria, there are so many laws that can deal with this issue. “Some people even proposed having a hate speech law.

We must accept the outcome of whatever the people decided. After all, people voted for our political leaders. Let us listen to the voices of the people. It is important for us to do the wish of Nigerians,” the Sultan said.

23 Nigerians Jailed In France For Sex Trafficking (SEE Details)

23 Nigerians Jailed In France For Sex Trafficking (Read Details)

A French court has sentenced 23 Nigerians and one Frenchman, all members of a Lyon-based sex trafficking ring to prison terms of up to seven years for forcing Nigerian women into prostitution.

It was the latest case to highlight the growing use of African migrants in the European sex trade.
Among those sentenced was Europe’s most wanted woman, fugitive Jessica Edosomwan, accused of acting as a France-based “madam” to women recruited mainly in Nigeria’s Edo State.
Edosomwan was tried in absentia. Also sentenced was self-styled Pastor Stanley Omoregie, 35, who said he just wanted to help the people in his community.

He denied in court the accusation of being involved in running a prostitution racket and trafficking of young girls from Nigeria to Europe.
Half of the 24 defendants present are women, mostly under 35 years old, and suspected of being the “mamas” of the network, in other words pimps.
Nigeria was the main country of origin for the tens of thousands of migrants who crossed the Mediterranean to Europe by boat in 2016 and 2017.

Many were women and girls lured to Europe with false promises of jobs as hairdressers or seamstresses, only to find themselves selling sex to repay their smugglers.

Seventeen women filed complaints against the defendants but none of the victims attended the trial, with the exception of one former sex worker who found herself in the dock for luring another woman into the trade.

The accused had faced up to 10 years’ imprisonment on charges including human trafficking, pimping, money laundering and helping people live illegally in France.

Prosecutors estimated that the victims, aged 17 to 38, made up to 150,000 euros ($166,000) a month for the syndicate by selling sex in vans parked by the side of the road for as little as 10 euros.
A French mechanic who looked after the vans was among the 24 defendants.

Mairo Abdulahi Bashir, a business manager with United Bank for Africa, UBA, and first prosecution witness, (PW1), in the ongoing trial of Abdulrasheed  Maina, former chairman, Pension Reform Task Team before  Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, November 29, 2019 disclosed that  Maina used his sister’s name to open a secret bank account with the UBA, through which funds were transferred.

According to the witness, Maina passed off the account as belonging to his sister, while he actually operated it.

The witness under cross- examination by defense counsel, Esther Uzoma denied harbouring  any ulterior motive in her testimonies.
Uzoma had accused the witness of nursing an ulterior motive by not revealing to the UBA authorities,  Maina’s huge monetary transactions, including documents containing the alleged deposits and withdrawals in local and foreign currencies by Common Input and Properties Ltd, (allegedly belonging to the defendant).

The witness denied any ulterior motives in her testimonies, revealing further that Maina presented a certificate of incorporation for Common Input and Properties Ltd, with his sister’s photograph and her personal details but endorsed the document with his own signature.

Justice Abang adjourned the case until December 9, 10, and 11 for continuation of trial.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Maina on a 12-count charge, bordering on operating fictitious bank accounts, corruption fraud and money laundering to the tune of over N2 billion.

Nigeria's Buhari seeks parliamentary nod on $23 billion in foreign loans

Nigeria's Buhari seeks parliamentary nod on $23 billion in foreign loans

ABUJA, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has asked parliament to approve $22.72 billion of foreign borrowings tied to infrastructure and other projects, according to a letter seen by Reuters on Friday, after a similar request three years ago was rejected.

In the letter dated Nov. 26, Buhari said parliament did not approve a $30 billion external borrowing plan in its entirety. Rather, a $4.5 billion Eurobond sale was approved alongside five projects out of a total of 39.

He asked for the lower house to reconsider and approve the external borrowing plan for 2016-2018 as well as projects tied to the funds, he said in the letter.

The government has said it wanted to borrow more from abroad so that 40% of its loans come from offshore sources by 2019 to lower cost and help fund its record budgets. Buhari plans to spend 10.33 trillion naira ($33.8 billion) next year, a 17% increase over this year’s budget.

The Debt Management Office (DMO) said it had no plans to use the international debt market in 2019 after its sixth Eurobond sale a year earlier. However, the debt office has said the government plans to tap cheap concessionary loans this year.

The new borrowings are tied to projects supported by the World Bank, African Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, German Development Bank and China EXIMBank, the letter read.
“Outstanding projects in the plan that were not approved by the legislature are ... critical to the delivery of the government’s policies and programmes relating to power, mining, roads, agriculture, health, water and educational sectors,” Buhari said in the letter.

In 2016, Buhari asked the Senate to approve $30 billion of foreign borrowing to fund projects. But the Senate dealt him an unexpected blow by rejecting the plan.
During Buhari’s first term, the executive was embroiled in a power tussle with the legislature that slowed government including confirmation of appointments. However, in February, Buhari won a second term while some of his party loyalists in parliament were re-elected.

Nigeria has been borrowing abroad to fund projects after a 2016 recession caused largely by low global oil prices, but debt service costs have been rising. (Reporting by Camillus Eboh in Abuja Writing by Chijioke Ohuocha Editing by Matthew Lewis)

A couple surprised their Denny's waitress who walked hours to work with a new car

A couple surprised their Denny's waitress who walked hours to work with a new car

(CNN)While it doesn't have much to do with Turkey, a waitress at a Denny's restaurant in Galveston, Texas, has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
Almost every day, Adrianna Edwards walks over four hours to and from work.

"I have bills to pay," Edwards told CNN affiliate KTRK . "I've got to eat. You've got to do what you've got to do."
But her walking days are finally over.
A couple she served at the restaurant on Tuesday bought her a new car -- just hours after they'd met.

Edwards can now start college earlier than she thought.
The couple, who wanted to remain anonymous, were at Denny's for breakfast when they found out that Edwards was walking 14 miles just to get to her job and go back home.
The waitress, who was saving up money to buy a car to free herself from the long trek, gave the woman extra ice cream. But what she got in return was much sweeter.

The Texas couple finished their meal, left the restaurant, and came back with a 2011 Nissan Sentra and handed Edwards the keys. This car will turn what was a five hour walk into a 30 minute commute.
"She teared up, which made me happy that she was so moved by that," the woman who bought Edwards the car told KTRK
All the couple asked in return for the car was for Edwards to simply pay the good deed forward. And that's exactly what she aims to do.
"I still feel like I'm dreaming. Every two hours, I come look out my window and see if there's still a car there. When I see somebody in need, I'll probably be more likely to help them out (and) to do everything that I can to help them out," Edwards said

Neanderthal extinction caused by inbreeding and small populations rather than by humans, study suggests

Neanderthal extinction caused by inbreeding and small populations rather than by humans, study suggests

An employee of the Natural History Museum in London looks at model of a Neanderthal male in his twenties: PA
Humanity may not bear the brunt of the blame for the extinction of our Neanderthal cousins, according to a new study, which suggests they could have been killed off by maintaining small populations and inbreeding without having ever come into contact with Homo sapiens.
Paleoanthropologists agree Neanderthals died out some 40,000 years ago – disappearing after 350,000 years on the planet, at roughly the same time that anatomically modern humans began to migrate out of Africa and into Europe and western Asia.
However, questions remain over how involved Homo sapiens were in the Neanderthal decline – with one theory suggesting modern humans may have been better at collecting resources than their hominid relations due to their capacity for high-level thought and social processing.
Now a study from the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, has suggested that even without competition from humans, Neanderthals could have died out through the small scale of their populations, inbreeding, and random demographic fluctuations.
Lead author Krist Vaesen from Eindhoven University, along with her colleagues, asks: “Did Neanderthals disappear because of us?
“No, this study suggests. The species’ demise might have been due merely to a stroke of bad, demographic luck.
“Our results indicate that the disappearance of Neanderthals might have resided in the smallness of their populations alone – even if they had been identical to modern humans in their cognitive, social and cultural traits, and even in the absence of [competition for the same resources], Neanderthals faced a considerable risk of extinction.”
The study was conducted using data from hunter-gatherer populations that still exist, and creating population models to represent Neanderthal groups of different sizes.
Researchers then simulated the effects of inbreeding, Allee effects – a phenomenon where population size effects the fitness of members of the group – and random yearly changes in the numbers of births and deaths, as well as gender ratios.
From there they tested to see if these factors alone could have caused extinction over a period of 10,000 years – finding that while inbreeding by itself was unlikely to have led to the decline of Neanderthals, it could have had an impact when combined with a sudden decline in birth rates.
Reproduction-related Allee effects, which see females giving birth within a year to 25 per cent or less, are commonly seen in modern-day hunter-gatherer groups and could have caused extinctions in Neanderthal groups as large as 1,000 – according to the study.
Researchers hope that the study may now prove as a baseline to test competing theories on the exact cause of extinction for humanity’s distant cousins.
The study concludes: “Regardless of whether external factors [climate or epidemics] or factors related to resource competition played a role in the actual demise of Neanderthals, our study suggests that any plausible explanation of the demise also needs to incorporate demographic factors as key variables.”

Reps asks Army, Navy to stop the burning of seized bunkered oil

Reps asks Army, Navy to stop the burning of seized bunkered oil

The House of Representatives has asked for an end to the burning of seized bunkered petroleum resources due to its impact on the environment.

The House urged the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, Chief of Naval, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas and Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, to put an end to the current system.
The House reached the resolution following a motion moved by Francis Waive on Thursday.

Mr. Waive in his motion conceded that the military have the power to seize illegal good, he however, condemned the process of disposing the items.
“Under Nigerian laws, oil exploration and exploitation are the sole responsibility of the Federal Government and any extraction of oil without the consent of the Government is illegal
“Sizable quantity of the nation’s daily production of crude oil is being extracted and diverted illegally through acts of bunkering and vandalization of pipelines by hoodlums.”

Waive revealed that bunkering has a double effect of denying Nigerians the resources and also impacting on the environment.
Citing several examples of incidence of disposal and its unintended impacts on the people.

“There have been series of complaints from the Niger Delta region of illegal disposal of seized crude oil by military personnel into the river and burning of the bunkering materials, leading to explosion, air arid water pollution.
“About three months ago, some military personnel went to Warri market, upon discovering some diesel products in the market, destroyed the containers and poured the contents into the drainage in the market and suddenly fire broke out;

“In January 2019, military operatives launched an offensive against some vandals, setting ablaze over 50 vehicles found to be carrying stolen oil products at their check point along Okpare Road in Ughelii South Local Government Area of Delta State.”

To end the trend, the lower chamber asked National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to immediately stop the method of disposal of seized crude Oil by the military
Also urged the National Environmental Standards and Regulatory Agency(NESREA) to cause a discontinuation of the current method that Military Personnel use in disposing of seized crude oil
To finally understand the process, the House mandated its Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to investigate the matter and report back within six (6) weeks for further legislative action.

FG supports indigenous curriculum-based learning app ▷ StudyMate

FG declares support for indigenous curriculum-based learning app

- The federal government thas commended the ingenuity demonstrated in the launch of a new curriculum-based e-learning software

- The e-learning software is based on the government-approved curriculum and an alternative to the textbooks used in secondary schools

- A mobile version of the e-learning software has also been launched

The federal government through the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) has commended the ingenuity demonstrated in the launch of a new curriculum-based e-learning software, Studymate.

NERDC executive secretary Professor Ismail Junaidu gave the commendation at the official unveiling of StudyMate in Abuja on Thursday, November 28.
StudyMate is an e-learning software that is based on the NERDC curriculum and is a perfect alternative to the textbooks used in secondary schools.

Represented by Dr Eleri Nnanna Otu-Eleri, Junaidu said that the NERDC had monitored the entire process of developing the software and thus acknowledges the quality of the software for learning in schools.
He said that Information Communication Technology (ICT) was changing the way things are done around the world and it was now changing even the way we learn.

He stressed that companies with such innovation deserve great commendation for their contribution to improving the education sector.
He reminded the audience that the NERDC is charged with the responsibility to develop, review and enrich curriculum at all levels of education in Nigeria; undertake, regulate and promote book development, and local authorship.
The executive secretary noted that the boundless nature of ICT has made it possible for teaching and learning to happen almost anywhere and anytime.

“This application is like somebody is teaching you. Another thing that is so interesting about what they have done is that they did not go outside the approved national curriculum.
“This thing should go viral, it is offline so it does not require internet. It would aid teaching and learning, it would facilitate and help NERDC implement the national curriculum,” he said.

Meanwhile, a mobile version of StudyMate has also been launched.
In a related development, members of the House of Representatives recently directed the ministry of education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to abolish the payment of acceptance fees into tertiary institutions in the country.
The directive followed the adoption of a motion brought by the lawmaker representing Ahiazu/Ezinihitte federal constituency of Imo state, Chinedu Martins, at plenary.

The Applicant told the court that he is a Nigerian citizen by naturalization, Cameroonian by birth and has been lecturing at the Bayero University for over two decades.

Consequently, among other reliefs, he prayed the court for: “A declaration that the arrest and detention of the Applicant from January 7, 2018, till Friday January 26, 2018, without being charged to court for a known offence is Illegal and unconstitutional as it violates the Applicant’s fundamental rights to personal liberty, dignity of person and fair hearing as enshrined in sections 34, 35 and 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I999 (as amended) and Articles 5, 6 and 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples‘ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act (CAP A10) Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

“A Declaration that the detention of the Applicant from January 7, 2018 till Friday January 26, 2018, by the 1st Respondent without granting him access to his family, lawyers, medical doctors, is illegal and unconstitutional as it violates the Applicant’s fundamental rights to private and family life, legal representative and health as enshrined in Section 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I999 (as amended) and Article 16 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act (CAP A10) Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

House of Reps approves VAT increase

House of Reps approves VAT increase

Members of the House of Representatives have approved President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to increase value added tax (VAT) from 5 percent to 7.5 percent.

The lower legislative chamber approved the request on Thursday, November 28, 2019, during plenary session.
The rep members approved the request barely a week after the senate passed the bill on VAT increment.
The finance bill seeks to amend six tax provisions, including that of the Customs and Excise Tariff Act.
After laying the 2020 Appropriation Bill before the National Assembly, President Muhammadu Buhari had sent the bill to both the Senate and the House to approve the increment through the amendment in October 2019.
Earlier in November, the House of Representatives had criticised the plans by the Federal Government to increase VAT.
The lawmakers argued that the proposed increase will create more problems for the masses.
